Tim Kunes, a McKeesport native raised on upper Soles Street, graduated from McKeesport Area School District in 1982. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Public Administration from Geneva College and his master’s degree in Education from George Mason University.

Returning to McKeesport in 1993, Tim dedicated 30 years to teaching social studies at McKeesport Area School District, with the last decade as head of the Social Studies Department, before retiring in 2023. As a history teacher and admirer of world cultures, he enriched his knowledge through educational programs in India, China, Japan and Turkey, and backpacked through Europe twice, also leading three McKeesport student trips to Europe. In retirement, Tim enjoys family time, reading, gardening, genealogy, doing house projects on his 200 year old farmhouse and walking his dog. He remains committed to our region through community events and the service projects of White Oak Rotary.

Tim, a dedicated public school teacher and long-time community member, brings his expertise in curriculum development and community engagement to his new role as Executive Director of the Heritage Center. His deep-rooted connection to the region equips him with a unique understanding of its history and interests, enabling him to effectively guide programming. Tim is enthusiastic about advancing the Heritage Center’s mission to preserve and showcase the history of McKeesport and its surrounding communities.
